BrewDog stout in challenge to Guinness

Scottish brewer BrewDog has launched a new nitro stout, Black Heart, in a direct challenge to market leader Guinness. The new beer is 4.1 per cent, identical to the Irish beer and will be on sale in pubs from 1 February followed by a packaged version later in the month, BrewDog will have samples of the beer available outside Twickenham rugby ground during the Six Nations tournament, which is sponsored by Guinness

Top awards for pubs saved by locals

A Hampshire pub dating from 1721 has been given the top Pub Savings Award by the Campaign for Real Ale. The Plough Inn closed in 2015 but local people raIsed money through donations, grants and a community share scheme to buy the pub and restore it. The runner-up in the awards is the Three Horseshoes in Helions Bumpstead in Essex

Klopp boots Erdinger to top sales spot

Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool FC, is also the ambassador for the German wheat beer Erdinger in Britain. As a result of the collaboration, Erdinger is now the biggest-selling imported wheat beer in the country. It's brewed with malts grown on farms near the brewery and with hops from the Hallertau region.

Timothy Taylor's Brewery in Keighley, West Yorkshire, has seen a big jump in sales of Landlord Best Bitter, which is now the second biggest selling cask beer in the country. There has also been big increases in beer sales from such independent brewers as St Austell and Wadworth.

Autumn cheer from Fuller's Vintage

The 26th edition of Fuller's Vintage Ale sold out as soon as bottles hit the shelves but it's due to be back in Waitrose on 26 October and is also available from the brewery's online shop. The new vintage includes a new English hop called Emperor. The beer is also on sale on draught in a small selection of Fuller's pubs.
