Global giant set to axe White Shield IPA
Molson Coors, a global brewer that took over the old Bass breweries in Burton-on-Trent, says it plans to "rest" production of Worthington's White Shield, a world-famous Burton IPA first brewed in the 19th century. Production has ceased for the "foreseeable future", which means it's unlikely to be brewed again. But Molson Coors say the beer remains part of its portfolio and the group refuses to sell the brand

Elland Brewery wins top beer award
Elland Brewery in Yorkshire has won the coveted Champion Beer of Britain award for 1872 Porter at CAMRA's Great British Beer Festival at London Olympia. The beer has previously been named Champion Winter Beer four times. There were also awards for beers in a range of categories

Anchor's away: an American icon closes
The Anchor Brewery in San Francisco, famous for its Steam Beer, is being closed by its owner, Sapporo of Japan. The brewery was bought in 1965 by Fritz Maytag whose success inspired many other breweries to open and start the American beer revolution. Maytag also brewed a range of conventional beers, including Liberty Ale.

Thornbridge goes big on bottles
Thornbridge Brewery in Derbyshire is boosting the premium bottled beer sector with the launch of seven beers in bottle-conditioned form. The beers include its leading beer Jaipur IPA, and six others that are all available in cask form as well. One of the seven is Kelham Island Pale Rider: Kelham Island Brewery in Sheffield closed in 2022 but has reopened with the support of local beer-loving entrepreneurs

Ringwood: another one bites the dust
The Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company has put the Ringwood Brewery and its brands up for sale. It claims the current site in Ringwood, Hampshire, is to restricted to expand. Who will buy the brewery during a cost of living crisis and what will happen to such popular beers as Old Thumper? In just one year since CMBC was created it has sold or closed three sites and there must now be a major question mark over the future of the Wychwood Brewery in Oxfordshire

Launch of Belgian & Brit collab beers
Four brewers from the Norfolk area went to Leuven in Belgium earlier this year to meet with counterparts there and plan beers using both British and Belgian ingredients and styles. The beers were unveiled at the launch of Norwich City of Ale and will be available in some of the 59 pubs supporting the festivities.

New home for historic hops collection
The National Hop Collection is moving to a new and bigger site in Kent where as many as 350 varieties will be grown and collated. Dr Peter Darby (pictured), founder of Wye Hops, has come out of retirement to oversee the move and the planting of the hops. The collection is supported by Shepherd Neame, Britain's oldest brewer based in Faversham. It has funded the move and will continue to give financial backing for at least five years

Budvar & Thornbridge brew collab lager
Czech brewer Budweiser Budvar has joined forces with leading independent brewer Thornbridge in Bakewell, Derbyshire, to produce a collaboration lager, Czech Mates, 4.8%. It's brewed with Maris Otter malt and East Kent Goldings hops and is fermented with Budvar's yeast culture. The beer is aged for six weeks, far longer than most lagers brewed in the UK.
