Big drive to boost cask ale sales
Cask Ale Week runs from 21 September to 1 October and it has a special role this year to reverse the fall in sales as a result of the Covid pandemic and pub lockdowns. The celebration will also attempt to bring younger drinkers on board by stressing that cask beer has rich and vibrant flavours and is brewed from the finest natural ingredients. Bright new handpulls on bars will also draw customers' attention to the beers on offer

Global lager brewers on the rampage
Jennings Brewery in Cumbria is to close as a result of a decision by owners Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company. This follows on the heels of the decision in June by Heineken to close the Caledonian Brewery in Heineken. And now Heineken has taken complete control of Beavertown in Nortrh London

I&G launches beer aged in sherry casks
Scottish brewer Innis & Gunn, famous for its oak-aged beer, has aged its flagship Original in sherry casks bought from Pedro Ximinez in Spain, The beer cements the long love Scots have for sherry that was landed in the Port of Leith in Edinburgh, Innis and Gunn's home base.

Home brew champions unveiled at GBBF
New beers on the block
Flavourly, the online craft beer specialist, has launched Small Batch Originals, a range of new craft beers from Wiper and True, Brew by Numbers, Siren Craft Brew, Tempest, Anspach & Hobday and Wild Card, In Devon, Salcombe Brewery has launched its first IPA, Atlas, brewed with British, American and New Zealand hops. The Co-op has launched Toast, a hazy pale ale, in collaboration with Toast, using surplus bread from its suppliers.

CAMRA unveils top pub awards
A Victorian pub, the Boleyn Tavern, that once stood next to West Ham United's football ground, has won the prestigious Community Local award from CAMRA in its Pub Design Awards. Wells & Co and Joules Brewery have jointly won the New Build award for Brewpoint in Bedford and the Crown Wharf in Stone while Stay Original Company won the Refurbishment Award for the Kings Arms in Dorchester

Anger at delay in beer duty review
Brewers and consumer groups have acted angrily to a delay in a review of beer excise duty levels. The review was announced in the 2021 budget but will not be brought in until the autumn. CAMRA, SIBA, UK Hospitality and the British Beer & Pub Association have all called on the government not to delay the review and to bring in a lower rate of duty for draught beer. Protz chooses some of world's top beers
Roger Protz is one of eight leading beer writers who have combined to choose their favourite brews for the new book The World's Greatest Beers, published by CAMRA Books. It will be launched on 2 August, the opening day of the Great British Beer Festival. Protz says he has chosen 33 beers that reflect both great standard bearers along with beers from the vast number of new breweries to be found throughout the world

Hopes rise to save famous Farriers
The Farriers Arms in St Albans, home to the first CAMRA branch in 1972, has been awarded an Asset of Community Value listing by the local council. The pub is up for sale but the ACV means there will be a six-month moratorium on the sale during which time supporters and councillors will seek a suitable new owner who will keep the pub open.

Olympia beer fest is best in world
The Great British Beer Festival is back after a two-year break as a result of Covid. With beers from 12 countries, GBBF is now the world's major festival where choice is concerned. As well as beer, cider, perry, wine and gin will be showcased. There will be live music and street food, a home-brewing competition and daily talks and tastings.
