IPAs dominate World Beer Cup

India Pale Ale stole the show at the World Beer Cup in Philadelphia, with 275 entries for American-style IPAs and 181 for Imperial IPAs. In awards to breweries, the mid-size category was won by Brewery Ommegang in Coopers Town, New York State (pictured), which specialises in Belgian-style beers. There were more than 6,600 beers entered from 1,907 breweries in 55 countries

Festival brings back lost Manchester beers

Beers that disappeared as long as a century ago in Manchester will be revived by micro-breweries using old recipes from JW Lees and Heginbotham's breweries. The beers will be available during Manchester Beer Week, 10-19 June, and they have been restored with the help of historian Ron Pattinson. The beer week coincides with the charity event Forever Manchester that will have a special pale ale, Ten Boroughs, brewed to help the cause

Restaurants will attract more customers if they serve beer with food, according to the Society of Independent Brewers that speaks for Britain's independent producers. SIBA says one in three people would visit restaurants more often if they served good beer. The organisation is seeking meetings with top restaurateurs to discuss the vast range of beer styles now available in Britain.

Naked Ladies, a golden ale brewed by Twickenham Brewery in London, has seen off stiff competition to win a listing in all Majestic Wine stores for its Naked Ladies. The beer was inspired by statues of water nymphs in a local park. The brewery, founded in 2004, was the first new brewery in the area since the 1920s

Michael Hardman, one of the founders of the Campaign for Real Ale in the 1970s, has returned to the fray to chair CAMRA's Revitalisation Project that will ask its 180,000 members whether it should remain focused on cask beer or become more inclusive by becoming a consumer movement that represent all beer drinkers.

Two degrees courses at Nottingham University's Brewing Science Department is attracting students from big and small breweries as well as people keen to make brewing a career. Research work on the courses includes analysing the best use of water, yeast and hops. Some of the investment in the courses comes from SABMiller and this could be affected by the takeover by AB InBev

A new beer from Czech brewer Budweiser Budvar uses the age-old method of "krausening" for its new 4% lager. The beer is neither filtered nor pasteurised and has a slight natural haze in the glass as a result of a powerful second fermentation in the brewery's cellars before it is kegged. The beer will be launched on 10 March in pubs in London and Manchester
