The brainchild of Dawn Leeder and Phil Cutter, City of Ale is more than a beer festival but is a rolling programme of events in pubs and breweries, with talks and tastings by local brewers and beer writers, including Adrian Tierney-Jones and Roger Protz

Special beer celebrates charity hero

Farr Brew in Hertfordshire has launched a special beer to celebrate the life of Joe "Chief" Paul, a great supporter of charities and community groups, who died tragically young. 10% of the price of a pint of Chief Jester will go to the Rennie Hospice. The beer was launched at the Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, Britain's oldest pub, and is available at other pubs in the county. Brewers win Gold in world awards

Brewers celebrated at London's Guildhall as they picked up Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in the International Beer & Cider championship. Pictured are some of the brewers with their trophies. 125 breweries from 21 countries entered the competition, held in Burton-on-Trent, and judges tasted more than 1,000 beers and ciders.

Now you can get canned with Meantime

Meantime Brewery in south London has responded to demand from drinkers and retailers and has launched three of its key beers -- London Pale Ale, London Lager and Yakima Red -- in cans. The brewery feels that canning technology has improved to such an extent that canned beers now taste as fresh as draught. The beers will be available in Co-op stores and other retailers are being lined up

Four regular beers from the Chiltern Brewery have been officially designated "gluten free" -- good news for beer lovers who have an intolerance to gluten, which mainly comes from wheat. Chiltern near Wendover is the oldest independent brewery in Buckinghamshire and is run by the Jenkinson family, who also manage the historic King's Head pub in Aylesbury

London brewery Fourpure stormed to victory in the brewery awards competition staged by SIBA at its annual BeerX in Sheffield. Fourpure was named Brewery of the Year and also won the prestigious Business Innovation Award for its sensory staff training scheme. New Tim Taylor beer has spring in its step

Renowned Yorkshire family brewer Timothy Taylor has added a blond beer, Knowle Spring, to its range of cask beers. The brewery has won an array of awards for its Landlord and Boltmaker bitters and has been encouraged by drinkers to add a lighter beer. Knowle Spring was launched at the Bradford Beer Festival with head brewer Andy Leman (left) and senior brewer Tom Slack in attendance.

Moor Beer's legendary strong ale Old Freddy Walker has won the prestigious Champion Winter Alof Britain title at CAMRA's National Winter Ales festival in Norwich. The silver award went to Sulwath Brewery in Scotland for Black Galloway and the bronze was awarded to Magic Rock for Dark Arts

Craft beer bonanza back in London

Craft Beer Rising returns to London for the fifth year running with 170 breweries lining up to present their brews to the crowds. Goose Island will feature a virtual reality tour of its hop farm and brewery in the U.S. while Fuller's will unveil a Black IPA and Sierra Nevada from California will have a bar dedicated to its beers.
