Villagers raise £300,000 to save their pub

Villagers in the tiny Devon village of Littlehempston -- population 207 -- have rallied to save their local pub, the Tally Ho Inn, that was threatened with being turned into housing. The inn has been given Asset of Community Value status and 100 villagers became shareholders in the co-op that now runs the pub and which is open for business

Budvar strong lager hits UK while sales in Czech Republic  reach an all-time high

The Czech brewery Budweiser Budvar is bringing its strong 7.5% Special Select beer -- aged for 200 days -- to Britain for the first time on draught. It will be available during the spring period and the unfiltered beer uses hops picked on 3 September and immediately added to the brew. In Prague, the new Czech government has declared that the brewery will remain in state hands while the trademark dispute with AB InBev continues. The brewery's exports are at a record high

Digging up history in a Cornish beer bottle

A bottle of beer thought to date from 1910 has been found at the site of St Piran's Oratory in the sands at Perranporth in Cornwall. The beer is a Walter Hicks' ale brewed at St Austell Brewery and was probably left by a worker engaged in encasing the oratory in concrete to protect it from sea and sand. Brewery archivist Chris Knight (pictured) says there's a drop of beer left in the bottle and it may be possible to identify the actual brew
