SIBA unveils national beer champions

Old Sodbury Mild from Cotswold Spring Brewery and Independence from Bristol Beer Factory claimed gold awards at the SIBA -- Society of Independent Brewers -- national conference in Sheffield. Wood-aged stout to wow St Patrick's Day

Innovative Edinburgh brewer Innis & Gunn, run by Dougal Sharp (left) has launched a special Irish Whiskey Cask Stout for St Patrick's Day. And it has joined forces with bartender David Ashton-Hyde of the Hinds Head at Bray, owned by Heston Blumenthal, to produce Smokin' Gunn based on the Rauch or smoked beers from Bamberg in Germany

Boom time for micros as SIBA records big growth in drinkers' demand for local beers

Independent brewers are enjoying a big growth in sales and demand, according to the annual report by SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers. Sales were up 7.9% in 2013, which means 3.3 million extra pints of local beer were consumed compared to 2012. Punch crisis could mean ruin for tenants if pubco goes bust and they lose £22.6m

The crisis at giant pubco Punch Taverns deepens as the group -- with debts totalling £2.3bn -- has been forced to abandon talks with shareholders. 'Rural gem' wins CAMRA top pub award

The Swan with Two Necks in the village of Pendleton in Lancashire has won the prestigious National Pub of the Year award from CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. The Swan beat off competition from pubs throughout the country. Landlord Steve Dilworth has run the pub for 27 years, features Copper Dragon ales as his house beers and says the secret of his success is "talking to the barrels"

Supermarket takeovers destroying pubs

Research by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, reveals that two pubs a week closed in 2012 as a result of takeovers by giant supermarkets. Tesco is by far the worst offender. CAMRA is calling on the government to close a loophole in the law that allows pubs to be turned in to other premises without planning permission
