Youth takes helm at Greene King brewery

Greene King has appointed 28 year-old Ross O'Hara as head brewer at its Suffolk brewery. Ross is a graduate of Heriot Watt School of Brewing & Distilling in Edinburgh and has also qualified as a Master Brewer. He is only the 17th head brewer in Greene King's 220-year history

Stroud: going green in the Cotswolds

S troud Brewery, launched by Greg Pilley (pictured) in 2006, has moved to new premises where Greg and his team produce a range of organic beers to meet his passion for aiding the environment.The new site includes a tap room and bar where local people can enjoy the beers along with pizzas cooked in an oven imported from Naples. At present Stroud has a 20-barrel kit but Greg plans to expand to 40 barrels as demand grows

Fuller's: end of family brewing in London

The sale for £250 million of Fuller's brewery and brands to Asahi of Japan brings to an end the long history of family brewing in London. Fuller's sold up as a result of falling profits from brewing, with cask sales in particular down by 10 per cent, with far more money to be made from pub retailing. The worry now is that the Japanese giant will reduce the beer range is order to turn London Pride into an "international brand".

Poppyland safe in new brewing hands

Martin Warren, prize-winning owner of Poppyland Brewery in Cromer, has handed over ownership of the brewery to Dave Cornell. Dave is moving to the Norfolk seaside town to continue to brew the eclectic range of beers, some using foraged plants and herbs, and will build on the portfolio. New ale celebrates Belhaven's 300th

Belhaven in Dunbar is Scotland's oldest brewery and it will mark its 300th anniversary in 2019 with a series of events at the brewery, including the opening of a new visitor centre. It kicks off the year with a special new ale,1719, in bottle and on draught, to show both the ancient and modern side of the brewery

Baa Gum -- the Black Sheep beer saga

Paul Theakston, seen with is sons Jo and Rob, left the family brewery in Masham in the Yorkshire Dales when it was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle. He nursed his wounds for a few years then opened Black Sheep in a former maltings just yards from the rival brewery. He devised a new course for his brewery: he owned no pubs and relied on the free trade. It's been a rocky road but the brewery is flourishing. Paul has now handed over the reins to his sons and can reflect on his tumultuous brewing story

Meet Sofoklis, Greek beer's philosopher

Sofoklis Panagiotu founded Septem Brewery at the height of the Greek financial crisis but he has survived and now runs the biggest craft brewery in the country. He produces both draught and bottled beers and exports to 13 countries. He grows his own hops and used them to make a wet hop beer this autumn with Cascade and Chinook varieties. There are now some 45 small craft breweries in Greece but they face stiff competition from Heineken and Carlsberg who account for around 85% of beer sales

Fuller's pilot plant to fashion new beers

London's oldest family brewer, Fuller's of Chiswick, has added a pilot brewery as part of its visitor centre. It will enable the brewing team to develop small-run new brews with exciting and unusual flavours. Successful beers will then be scaled up for production in the main brewery. Hogs Back heads for new hop heights

Hogs Back brewery near Farnham in Surrey will more than double its production of hops when it moves to a new 8-acre site in 2019. The hops will grow alongside the brewery at Manor Farm and the range will include Farnham White Bine, English Cascade and Pioneer. White Bine was the forerunner of Goldings but disappeared until Hogs Back managing director Rupert Thompson revived the variety in 2014.

Historic Hooky is set for the future

Hook Norton Brewery is a magical place centred on a classic Victorian tower brewery. It has a steam engine, oak-lined brewing vessels and horse-drawn drays. But it's not living in the past. Managing director James Clarke has dramatically increased the range of beers and has turned the site into a major tourist attraction with a visitor centre, restaurant and a pilot brewery where beer lovers can make their own brews.
