Plans for brewery at Edinburgh university

Leading Scottish brewer Innis & Gunn has submitted plans to Edinburgh council for a new brewery to be based at Heriot-Watt University with its world-famous school of brewing. I&G plans to produce both lager and its Original oak-aged beer at the new site, which will also have facilities for canning and bottling. Pictured: an artist's impression of the new brewery

Duncan Sambrook is Young's at heart

Duncan Sambrook opened his brewery in Battersea when Young's closed in Wandsworth in 2006. Now Duncan plans to move his plant to the former Young's site that's now part of the Ram Quarter of housing and offices. He will restore a tradition of brewing that goes back to the time of Elizabeth the First.

Craft brewers hammered by lockdown

A report by SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers, shows that beer sales from small craft brewers are down by 82 per cent since the coronavirus lockdown was brought in. A number of small brewers are considering making staff redundant as they have no received no government support. 65 per cent of SIBA members have suspended brewing and some fear they may never start again. SIBA is calling on the government to defer beer duty until the crisis is over

Cornwall mourns a champion brewer

Peter Martin, brewer at Driftwood Spars in Cornwall, has died aged just 56 after a short illness. His beer Alfie's Revenge was named Champion Winter Beer of Britain in 2012 in the CAMRA competition.

Greene King: another one bites the dust

Greene King, one of Britain's oldest breweries dating from 1799, has been sold for £2.7 billion to a Hong Kong property developer called CK Asset Holdings.The new owner has no roots in brewing or pubs and there are fears the tied estate of 2,700 could be drastically reduced, throwing a question mark over the future of brewing at Bury St Edmunds.

Sambrooks Brewery in Battersea plans to relocate in 2020 to the Ram Quarter in Wandsworth, South-east London -- the site of the historic Young's brewery that closed in 2006. £70m expansion boost for Czech Budvar

A £70 million investment at Budweiser Budvar in the Czech Republic will enable the state-owned brewery to boost annual production to 2 million hectolitres.The brewery exports to 80 countries, with Germany its main customer and enjoying healthy sales in the UK. West Berks bucks trend with beer boost

West Berkshire Brewery has invested £9 million in re-branding its ales and lagers with a 12 times expansion of production and the installation of state-of-the-art bottling and canning lines. It is bucking the trend with a 61 per cent increase in sales of its main cask beer Good Old Boy. Collaboration beers are planned while a further £1 million has been invested in environmentally sustainable production with a reed bed drainage system and a natural habitat for wildlife
