Carlow Brewing, Ireland's leading craft brewery, is investing more than 1 million euro in an expansion plan that will create 12 new jobs, including the brewing side. A tweet from Bradford brewery founder Matthew Halliday has enraged George Galloway, the Respect parliamentary candidate (pictured), and sparked a rush for the new brewery's beers and support on Twitter from around the world. On the positive side, this is the first new brewery in Bradford since the 1950s and, thanks to the political storm, sold six casks of ale in its tap room over Easter

National brewing giant Marston's has paid £25.1 million for the brewing division of Daniel Thwaites of Blackburn, a family-owned brewery dating from the 19th century. The deal will give Marston's control of two leading ale brands, Wainwright's and Lancaster Bomber

Peerless Brewing on the Wirral has grown from 12 to 30 barrels in five years and its new plant is energy-efficient, saving on electricity, oil and steam. The brewery has won a clutch of medals from the Society of Independent Brewers and offers a beer range that covers pale, gold and black and a strong stout that's a Riot to drink.

Truman's, the revived East London brewery, is planning a major expansion at its Hackney Wick site with a half-million pounds investment. The brewery opened in 2013, restoring the name of the famous Whitechapel brewery that closed during the period of mergia mania at the end of the 20th century. In a bid to further sales and interests of Scottish beer, eight independent brewers have joined forces to form The Brewers' Association of Scotland. They hope to draw in other craft breweries to expand sales nationally and globally. Representatives of the eight breweries met in the Scottish Parliament, with TBAS chairman Dougal Sharp of Innis & Gunn pictured third from the right. And Caledonian Brewery has revamped its 80 Shillng ale and renamed it Edinburgh Castle 80/-
