Risen from the grave: beers Watney killed are restored to their Northampton home

Northampton had two famous neighbouring breweries, Phipps and NBC. Both were destroyed by the large London brewer Watney that killed their ales in preference to keg Red Barrel. The breweries were knocked down to make way for a Carlsberg lager factory. But now the Phipps and NBC beers have risen from the grave and are being brewed again just yards from their original site

West Berkshire Brewery, chaired by David Bruce, will raise £4 million to help fund a move to a new brewery in the Thames Valley to keep pace with demand for its beers. Hop harvest on banks of the Thames

For the first time in more than 100 years, hops have been grown and harvested in London. Meantime Brewery, based in Greenwich, planted Fuggles on the banks of the river behind the O2 Arena. They were picked by volunteers and will be used in a new bottled beer later this year
