Britain's giant pubcos were dealt a major blow today when MPs voted to support a call to give pub tenants a "market rent" option to their contracts that will allow them buy beer free of the tie. The successful amendment was moved by Greg Mulholland (pictured second left with victorious landlords), chairman of the Parliamentary Save the Pub group. CAMRA hailed the vote a "landmark victory" for publicans and drinkers

British hop farmers have been given a major boost by supermarket giant Tesco with Single Hopped Kentish Ale. Brewed by Shepherd Neame in Faversham, it's the first beer to carry the logo of the British Hop Association run by Ali Capper (left) who grows hops with her husband Richard at Stocks Farm in Worcestershire. She hops the new beer will encourage more British brewers to use home-grown rather than imported hops

On Tuesday 18 November parliament will debate a Bill to give greater power to tackle giant pub companies. The Bill will propose creating a post of Pubs Adjudicator to settle fair rents for publicans. But missing from the Bill is the call for a "market only" rent that would give publicans the right to buy beer free of the pubco tie. 38 Degrees and CAMRA have joined forces with an online petition to MPs -- sign it now and help stop our pubs closing

Brewers from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Brittany joined forces with Roger Ryman, head brewer at St Austell Brewery in Cornwall, to brew a special Celtic IPA that reflects the rich tradition of brewing throughout the Celtic regions. The beer will be unveiled at the Celtic Beer Festival on 22 November at St Austell Brewery

Beer found in a shipwreck off the Finnish coast has been dated back to 1842 and has been recreated by brewing scientists at the University of Leuven in Belgium. Research shows the beer was made by spontaneous fermentation and probably came from a Belgian lambic brewery

Hogs Back Brewery in Tongham, Surrey, has joined forces with renowned chocolatier Montezuma to produce a lager with a dash of real chocolate. The beer flies in the face of the convention that chocolate, with its fat content, can't be added during the brewing process. The beer is lagered for five weeks and offers both malt, hops and chocolate -- just in time for National Chocolate Week
