Yorkshire Porter triumphs again

It's a hat trick of victories for Elland 1872 Porter, which has triumphed at the CAMRA National Winter Ales Festival in Derby. Judged against a range of old ales, stouts, strong mild and barley wines, the porter -- based on an authentic Victorian recipe -- was judged Champion Winter Beer of Britain by a panel of expert judges. Sales of bottled beer are set to soar

A major survey of the bottled beer sector conducted by Butcombe Brewery shows that retailers expect the sector to grow close to 13% in 2015. Many believe consumers should be given more information about beer styles and there should be more support for local and regional breweries

Burton Ale hits the comeback trail

Burton Bridge Brewery is bringing Draught Burton Ale back to its home town when a batch is brewed on 4 March. The beer was axed by Carlsberg in January but now Bruce Wilkinson and Geoff Mumford -- who first brewed DBA at Ind Coope in the 1970s -- will launch the beer at the Burton beer festival on 26 March

Terrible toll of pub closures goes on

Both towns and villages see the hearts ripped out of their communities as pubs close. They are being sold by pubcos to both supermarkets and property speculators to turn either into stores or expensive residential homes. Scots brewers unite to boost their beer

In a bid to further sales and interests of Scottish beer, eight independent brewers have joined forces to form The Brewers' Association of Scotland. They hope to draw in other craft breweries to expand sales nationally and globally. Representatives of the eight breweries met in the Scottish Parliament, with TBAS chairman Dougal Sharp of Innis & Gunn pictured third from the right. Beer Lovers bring back famous Bass stout

Three drinkers in Derby -- John Arguile, Dave Evans and Les Baynton -- have pooled their resources to launch Beer Lovers and plan to recreate old beer styles. They have got off to a flying start with Bass P2 Imperial Stout, produced by former Bass brewer Steve Wellington. Two casks of the beer were drained dry in Derby pubs and now the Beer Lovers are planning their next revival. London pub welcomes homeless at Xmas

Christmas arrived early in Islington, North London, on Sunday 21 December when the William IV pub laid on a special meal for the homeless and those struggling financially. 400 meals were served and vegetables for the occasion were donated by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. American home-brewers honour Obama

Barack Obama has been awarded life membership of the American Homebrewers Association for brewing beer in the White House -- the first American president to make beer in Washington's seat of power. The AHA says the president has done much to elevate the importance of home-brewing in America's customs and traditions. The home-brewers' body has also honoured Chef Sam Kass at the White House who developed recipes for Honey Ale and Honey Porter
