Will Hawkes, who writes for the Independent, was named the Michael Jackson Beer Writer of the Year by the British Guild of Beer Writers on 5 December. They include a stout brewed from a secret 19th century recipe at Shepherd Neame and a recreation by Westerham Brewery of two beers from the Black Eagle Brewery in Kent. A new beer from Czech brewer Budweiser Budvar -- Pardal -- has arrived in British pubs and supermarkets. The name means "panther" and the beer has been developed by consumers who joined tasting panels at the brewery. The drinkers said they wanted a beer of modest strength but with good hop character.
