Express trip for rare drop of Draught Bass

Express trip for rare drop of Draught Bass

The Express Tavern on Kew Bridge in London is a now rare outlet for Draught Bass, once Britain's leading premier cask ale but sidelined by its owners AB InBev and brewed under licence by Marston's in Burton-on-Trent. It's worth a visit to the pub for not just the beer but the fascinating history of an old coaching inn that has survived the change from coach to train and still serves a fine range of cask beers

Cask Report: the fight-back starts now

Cask Report: the fight-back starts now

Cask Beer needs some tender loving care, according to the 2019 Cask Report. It says too many pubs are serving cask beer at the wrong temperature and often in poor condition, which deters drinkers from returning to the category. Greene King IPA gets a major makeover

Greene King has re-launched its leading brand IPA following a long look at the beer's recipe. More hops are now added and it's hoped this will give the beer, with its modest 3.6% strength, greater hop character in the glass. The brewery has also revamped its approach to cask beer, installing smaller casks in pubs with a slow throughput to ensure beer is served fresh and cool.

Tate bread beer to help save the planet

The Tate galleries have teamed up with Fourpure brewery and Toast Ale to make a beer, Elemental, that has 40% of its grain bill made up of bread. The bread is sourced by Toast from bakeries and sandwich makers who throw away vast amounts of bread -- crusts are never used by sandwich makers, for example. Elemental is a sour beer made with cucumbers and a lactic acid culture.
