Dark Star Brewery in Sussex has launched a new edition of Gale's Prize Old Ale, a rare beer that's a blend of aged and fresh young beer. POA was brewed at Gale's in Hampshire until the brewery closed in 2066. A final batch of the beer was moved to Fuller's in Chiswick and has been used to make occasional new versions of the beer. Henry Kirk at Dark Start hopes it will now become an annual vintage.

Scott Wayland, pictured right in the taproom at the Sixpenny Brewery, brews on an former farm in Cranborne, Dorset, where the brewhouse is guarded by Daleks and K9 -- Scott is a former model maker who provided models for Dr Who. He now makes a series of ales sold in free houses in the area and also in the taproom that draws crowds of 250 on music evenings

Adnams in Southwold, Suffolk, celebrates 150 years of brewing in 2022. It has joined forces with the Sierra Nevada Brewery in California to make a special collaboration beer called Eastern Edge. It's fermented with yeasts from both breweries and uses Cascade and Chinook hops grown in the U.S. and England. Following a long battle with here landlords, Carol Ross is now the proud owner of the Roscoe Head in Liverpool, one of only five pubs to be listed in the Good Beer Guide for 50 years. She still bears the scars of her battle to win control of the pub but is now turning her attention to saving cask ale as it's replaced by "craft beer" in many Merseyside pubs

It's 10 years since Dave Wickett, landlord of the famous Fat Cat pub in Sheffield, died. Dave, who also founded Kelham Island Brewery, needed cask beer for the Fat Cat and brought Timothy Taylor Landlord from North Yorkshire. The beer had never been sold outside its immediate area before but its success in Sheffield turned it into a national brand.

Charlene Lyons, chief executive of Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire, is spearheading a major campaign to boost cask beer. "It's the heart of what we," she says. The brewery has recovered strongly from the pandemic and lockdowns and now aims, using social media, to attract young people to the pleasures of real ale. But older drinkers will not be forgotten. "There are a lot of lapsed cask drinkers out there," she says.

Mad Squirrel Brewery in Hertfordshire has developed a new system of serving fresh draught beer from a tank. Its taproom in St Albans has its best-selling Sumo pale ale on sale, stored in Frank the Tank. The beer is unfiltered and unpasteurised and contains live yeast. It stays in drinkable condition for five days

Sales of cask beer fell like a stone during the covid lockdowns but brewers feel confident that a revival is underway. Stuart Bateman, pictured with his sister Jaclyn, says his Lincolnshire brewery is doing well but cask must not be priced beyond drinkers' means. Fuller's famous strong ale ESB is 50 years old and Justin Hawke at Moor Beer, working with the Chiswick brewery, has brewed Rebirth, using the original recipe. Today only English hops are used but Justin has a mix of English, American, Australian and Slovenian varieties. He has also brought back maize, which is no longer used by Fuller's
