Brewers recreate Porter from the wood
Two South London brewers, Anspach & Hobday and Orbit Beers, have joined forces to recreate a genuine Running Porter from the 19th century, using a recipe from Truman's brewery in Whitechapel. The beer will be served from wooden casks at Woodfest, the annual celebration organised by the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood but bottled versions are available for purchase. One batch will be kept back and aged to produce a Keeping Porter

Norwich City of Ale bigger and better
The ground-breaking City of Ale in Norwich -- a roving festival based around the city's pubs -- is back after two years of lockdown. This year the event will run for a full month and will feature special beers brewed by some of the county's 40 breweries. The launch party takes place on Thursday 26 May. Beer bonanza heads back to Olympia
One of the world's top beer festivals, the Great British, returns to London Olympia this August following a two-year gap as a result of Covid and lockdowns. This year, thanks to a collaboration with the New England Real Ale Exchange, GBBF will feature a large number of American beers as well as ales from all parts of Britain.

Easter Saturday is boost Bass day
Lovers of Draught Bass are urging drinkers and pubs to boost the beer on 16 April, Easter Saturday, which has been dubbed National Bass Day. The beer is now owned by global giant AB InBev. At its peak 800,000 barrels a year were brewed but that fallen to just 30,000 today. Potential buyers of the beer would not be given the famous red triangle trademark.

Manchester goes Mad over Mild
Mild Ale will be given a major boost in March and April with a Mild Magic campaign run by CAMRA branches in the region. The campaign will be sponsored by Hydes Brewery, which still brews Mild Ale, and will be supported by two more mild breweries, JW Lees and Joseph Holt. Supporters of the scheme will go on a pub passport pub crawl that will win them entry to Stockport Beer Festival, a T-shirt with the mild logo and the chance to tour Holt's brewery

How Sheffield pub boosted Landlord
It's 10 years since Dave Wickett, landlord of the famous Fat Cat pub in Sheffield, died. Dave, who also founded Kelham Island Brewery, needed cask beer for the Fat Cat and brought Timothy Taylor Landlord from North Yorkshire. The beer had never been sold outside its immediate area before but its success in Sheffield turned it into a national brand.

Black Sheep in big push to boost cask
Charlene Lyons, chief executive of Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire, is spearheading a major campaign to boost cask beer. "It's the heart of what we," she says. The brewery has recovered strongly from the pandemic and lockdowns and now aims, using social media, to attract young people to the pleasures of real ale. But older drinkers will not be forgotten. "There are a lot of lapsed cask drinkers out there," she says.

Small brewers in tax plea to Sunak
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) have appealed to Chancellor Rishi Sunak to change his new tax rates for draught beer to include containers of less than 40 litres. Research shows that many pubs and bars do not have the cellar space or turnover to sell 40 litre containers. Guinness to brew in heart of London
Global brewing giant Guinness plans to build a micro-plant in Covent Garden in the heart of London. The brewery will cost £73 million and will cover an area known as Old Brewers' Yard where brewing has taken place for 500 years, The new plant is due to come on stream in 2023 and will offer tours and a restaurant.
