Hogs Back Brewery in Surrey has won new listings in a number of supermarkets, including Co-op and Morrison's, for its TEA bitter with Hogstar lager in Majestic Wines. The brewery has also announced two beers that are ideal for the Christmas period: Advent Ale and the strong vintage ale A over T. The beers are brewed with hops grown on the brewery's own garden and include Farnham White Bine, a historic variety revived by Hogs Back.

There are now more than 2,000 independent craft breweries in Britain -- a jump of 18 per cent in the past year, according to a new report by UHY Hacker Young. Tax breaks introduced by the last Labour government have encouraged new brewers -- including home brewers -- to enter the market. But the report warns that global brewers are moving into the craft sector and are keen to buy successful small breweries

The latest Cask Report underlines the importance of cask beer -- real ale --to Britain's pubs. With many new breweries opening, cask beer continues to encourage people to visit local pubs and enjoy the range on offer. The report says the diversity of beer available is now wide and consumption of real ale in pubs aids the British economy far more than coffee shops.

Danish brewer Carlsberg has found the genome in barley and its scientists are developing new varieties of grain that can resist drought and extreme temperatures and also use less water. The brewer is reducing its carbon footprint and is also developing new hop varieties that can be grown in the Nordic countries and Russia, which are too cold for conventional hops

Church End Brewery's Goats Milk Bitter has walked away with the Gold award in the Champion Beer of Britain competition staged by CAMRA at the Great British Beer Festival at London Olympia. The beer was first brewed as a one-off for a pub but proved so popular it has become a regular part of the brewery's range. Paul Hamblett from Church End is seen with the trophy at Olympia
