Historic Cockney pub restored to glory
A famous East End pub, the Boleyn Tavern, has been restored to its Victorian splendour thanks to a £1 million refurbishment by its owners, Remarkable Pubs. The pub was opened in 1900 by the Limehouse brewer Taylor Walker and it was visited on several occasions by Mahatma Gandhi when he was studying in London. The pub fell into disrepair when West Ham United moved to Stratford but it's now fully open with a good range of cask beers

Battle royal to save Art Deco gem
The future of the Iron Duke pub in Great Yarmouth hangs in the balance as the local council and preservation trust decide whether its future is as a pub or retail or private building. The Art Deco pub was built in the 1930s but has been closed for 15 years. It's now Grade II-listed but this will not protect it from being turned into different, alternative use

Chouffe has great beers to go gnome to
Freedom Day may off the agenda on 21 June but beer lovers can celebrate International Gnome Day with five beers from the celebrated La Chouffe brewery in Belgium. The chouffe are mythical gnomes who lived in the forests of the Ardennes and their image graces the labels and pump clips of the brewery. Coalition calls for beer tax relief for pubs
A coalition of brewers, consumers and pub groups has joined forces to urge the Chancellor to reduce the duty charged on draught beer to help pubs compete more fairly with cut-price beer in supermarkets. The group says a cut in duty would create many jobs for the pub sector and would encourage drinkers to use pubs more often

Innis & Gunn has launched an Islay Whisky Cask beer that has been aged in casks at the famous Laphroaig distillery on the island. The casks give the beer a peat, oak and iodine note, with the beer contributing roasted grain and hop character. It's a one-off special edition and will not be repeated so order now

Boom in new breweries beats lockdown
New breweries, numbering 210, opened in 2020 despite the corona virus and the shut down of pubs for many months, according to figures from the leading accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young. There are now 3,018 breweries in the UK and the company thinks many owners looked for new routes to market when pub sales were not available. It thinks drinkers are becoming more adventurous and are seeking out new styles of beer.

Strong Budvar flexes its muscles
The Czech brewer Budweiser Budvar has relaunched its strong 7.5 per cent beer as Budvar Reserve with new main and neck labels. The beer is aged for 200 days in the cellars of the brewery in Ceske Budejovice/Budweis and is brewed with pale malt from Moravia, acclaimed Saaz hops and pure, soft water from a well 300 metres below the brewery. The beer is available in bottle in Britain and in kegs when pubs reopen.

Duvel marks 150 years with devilish beer
Duvel Moortgat in Belgium is celebrating 150 years of brewing with a new version of its famous Duvel blond ale. Duvel 6.66% uses six hops and has added orange zest alongside the famous Poire William character of the original beer. Head brewer Hedwig Neven also worked in collaboration with the 't IJ' brewery in Amsterdam, which is now owned by Duvel Moortgat.
