The Cask Matters Group, made up of brewers and industry leaders, is urging all beer lovers to head for the pub and enjoy cask ale. During the lockdown more than 87 million pints of cask beer, worth £30 million, were poured down the drain and Paul Nunny of Cask Matters says we need to support our "national treasure" or it could disappear.

Quantock Brewery has celebrated its 1,500th brew with Milestone 1500, a 6.5 per cent beer described as a "Mountain IPA", combining West Coast and East Coast styles. The brewery was founded in 2008 with an eight-barrel plant that can produce 300 casks per week.

A famous East End pub, the Boleyn Tavern, has been restored to its Victorian splendour thanks to a £1 million refurbishment by its owners, Remarkable Pubs. The pub was opened in 1900 by the Limehouse brewer Taylor Walker and it was visited on several occasions by Mahatma Gandhi when he was studying in London. The pub fell into disrepair when West Ham United moved to Stratford but it's now fully open with a good range of cask beers

The future of the Iron Duke pub in Great Yarmouth hangs in the balance as the local council and preservation trust decide whether its future is as a pub or retail or private building. The Art Deco pub was built in the 1930s but has been closed for 15 years. It's now Grade II-listed but this will not protect it from being turned into different, alternative use

Freedom Day may off the agenda on 21 June but beer lovers can celebrate International Gnome Day with five beers from the celebrated La Chouffe brewery in Belgium. The chouffe are mythical gnomes who lived in the forests of the Ardennes and their image graces the labels and pump clips of the brewery. A coalition of brewers, consumers and pub groups has joined forces to urge the Chancellor to reduce the duty charged on draught beer to help pubs compete more fairly with cut-price beer in supermarkets. The group says a cut in duty would create many jobs for the pub sector and would encourage drinkers to use pubs more often

Saltaire Brewery in Shipley, West Yorkshire, has brewed a 5% Helles beer, along the lines of the famous Bavarian style consumed in large quantities in Munich beer gardens. The beer is cold conditioned or lagered for six weeks

Innis & Gunn has launched an Islay Whisky Cask beer that has been aged in casks at the famous Laphroaig distillery on the island. The casks give the beer a peat, oak and iodine note, with the beer contributing roasted grain and hop character. It's a one-off special edition and will not be repeated so order now

The Hophurst Brewery in Wigan brews great beers and also helps re-skill people over 50 to enable them to get back into the labour market. The brewery opened in 2014 and now has big range of beers available in local pubs and bars and plans its own taproom.

New breweries, numbering 210, opened in 2020 despite the corona virus and the shut down of pubs for many months, according to figures from the leading accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young. There are now 3,018 breweries in the UK and the company thinks many owners looked for new routes to market when pub sales were not available. It thinks drinkers are becoming more adventurous and are seeking out new styles of beer.
