Norwich City of Ale bigger and better

The ground-breaking City of Ale in Norwich -- a roving festival based around the city's pubs -- is back after two years of lockdown. This year the event will run for a full month and will feature special beers brewed by some of the county's 40 breweries. The launch party takes place on Thursday 26 May. Kelham Island Brewery, famous for its Pale Rider golden ale, is closing as a result of what owner Ed Wickett calls a "whirlwind" caused by Covid, lockdown and increases in fuel, grain and delivery charges. Guinness plans £73m London brewery

Guinness is to invest £73 million in a new micro-brewery and visitor centre in Covent Garden in central London. The site will cover 50,000 square feet and create 150 jobs. The site will be known as Guinness at Old Brewer's Yard and is on the historic Combe Brewery site that operated from the 18th to the early 20th century and became part of Watney Combe Reid

One of the world's top beer festivals, the Great British, returns to London Olympia this August following a two-year gap as a result of Covid and lockdowns. This year, thanks to a collaboration with the New England Real Ale Exchange, GBBF will feature a large number of American beers as well as ales from all parts of Britain.

Easter Saturday is boost Bass day

Lovers of Draught Bass are urging drinkers and pubs to boost the beer on 16 April, Easter Saturday, which has been dubbed National Bass Day. The beer is now owned by global giant AB InBev. At its peak 800,000 barrels a year were brewed but that fallen to just 30,000 today. Potential buyers of the beer would not be given the famous red triangle trademark.

Manchester goes Mad over Mild

Mild Ale will be given a major boost in March and April with a Mild Magic campaign run by CAMRA branches in the region. The campaign will be sponsored by Hydes Brewery, which still brews Mild Ale, and will be supported by two more mild breweries, JW Lees and Joseph Holt. Supporters of the scheme will go on a pub passport pub crawl that will win them entry to Stockport Beer Festival, a T-shirt with the mild logo and the chance to tour Holt's brewery

Small brewers in tax plea to Sunak

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) have appealed to Chancellor Rishi Sunak to change his new tax rates for draught beer to include containers of less than 40 litres. Research shows that many pubs and bars do not have the cellar space or turnover to sell 40 litre containers. Global brewing giant Guinness plans to build a micro-plant in Covent Garden in the heart of London. The brewery will cost £73 million and will cover an area known as Old Brewers' Yard where brewing has taken place for 500 years, The new plant is due to come on stream in 2023 and will offer tours and a restaurant.

On trade sales recovered fast once the lockdown ended. The beer is on draught and also in bottles and cans.
