Roger Protz is one of eight leading beer writers who have combined to choose their favourite brews for the new book The World's Greatest Beers, published by CAMRA Books. It will be launched on 2 August, the opening day of the Great British Beer Festival. Protz says he has chosen 33 beers that reflect both great standard bearers along with beers from the vast number of new breweries to be found throughout the world

The Farriers Arms in St Albans, home to the first CAMRA branch in 1972, has been awarded an Asset of Community Value listing by the local council. The pub is up for sale but the ACV means there will be a six-month moratorium on the sale during which time supporters and councillors will seek a suitable new owner who will keep the pub open.

The Great British Beer Festival is back after a two-year break as a result of Covid. With beers from 12 countries, GBBF is now the world's major festival where choice is concerned. As well as beer, cider, perry, wine and gin will be showcased. There will be live music and street food, a home-brewing competition and daily talks and tastings.

Andy Hepworth, founder of the Horsham-based brewery, has dug deep to install an in-house canning line for his ales, lagers and stouts. He is also stepping up his commitment to reducing CO2 with plans to be 85% carbon neutral by 2025

Yorkshire comedian Maisie Adam has joined forces with Black Sheep Brewery in Masham to promote cask ale. In a video commissioned by Black Sheep, Maisie tackles head-on some of the myths surrounding cask beer: that it's drunk only by old men and is served warm, flat and vinegary, Black Sheep describes cask as "the original craft beer", with a wide variety of styles that suit all age groups

St Austell Brewery in Cornwall has launched Anthem, a new pale ale that's brewed with all-British malts and hops. It's the first new beer to be made at the brewery since the arrival of head brewer Georgina Young from Fuller's. The beer features Maris Otter malting barley and four English hops

Heineken is to close the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh, ending 150 years of brewing at the historic site. The brewery achieved fame when its Deuchar's IPA was named CAMRA's Champion Beer of Britain. Heineken says the Victorian site is not brewing to full capacity and would need major investment to upgrade it.

Two South London brewers, Anspach & Hobday and Orbit Beers, have joined forces to recreate a genuine Running Porter from the 19th century, using a recipe from Truman's brewery in Whitechapel. The beer will be served from wooden casks at Woodfest, the annual celebration organised by the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood but bottled versions are available for purchase. One batch will be kept back and aged to produce a Keeping Porter

The ground-breaking City of Ale in Norwich -- a roving festival based around the city's pubs -- is back after two years of lockdown. This year the event will run for a full month and will feature special beers brewed by some of the county's 40 breweries. The launch party takes place on Thursday 26 May. Kelham Island Brewery, famous for its Pale Rider golden ale, is closing as a result of what owner Ed Wickett calls a "whirlwind" caused by Covid, lockdown and increases in fuel, grain and delivery charges. The brewery's famous Fat Cat pub in Sheffield will stay open and continue to sell Kelham Island beers while stocks last
