Virus wreaks havoc for British pubs
The 2021 edition of the Good Beer Guide, published by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, says the coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc for British pubs, many of which have not reopened since the first national lockdown was lifted in the summer. And for the first time for many years, the Guide reports a decline in the number of breweries operating in the country

Czeching in: Budvan's new pub service
The Budvan is a new service from Budweiser Budvar that delivers fresh Budvar Original to pubs with a full back-up service that enables the Czech lager to be served in tip-top condition. The Buvan is seen delivering beer to the Forge pub near Leicester, part of the Beautiful Pubs group.

Fuller's historic brewery tap to close
The Mawson Arms, Fuller's Grade II-listed brewery tap in Chiswick, West London, is to close. The pub dates from the 18th century and was named after the Mawson family that bought two small breweries near the Thames that later merged into Fuller, Smith & Turner. The brewery was sold to Asahi of Japan in 2019 and Fuller's is now a pub company. It has moved to new offices and says the pub is surplus to requirements.

New struggle over future of Roscoe Head
Carol Ross, pictured, landlady of the Roscoe Head in Liverpool -- one of the Famous Five pubs to feature in every edition of the Good Beer Guide -- is once again locked in a dispute with her landlord over its future. Last year New River Retail said it would more than double her rent and refused her request for Market Rent Only that would allow her sell beers free of the tie. Her lease is up for renewal and it's unclear whether New River will keep her on

Beer and pubs in the firing line
The nation's pubs are shut tight and it's not the first time they have suffered during a time of crisis. During the First World War, the teetotal Liberal politician David Lloyd George (pictured) drove through measures that drastically cut pub opening hours, increased the price of beer and remodelled pubs to make them less cheerful places to visit. Beer and Beatles are still the Mersey beat
Liverpool is famous for its pubs but it's worth wandering into the backstreets to find some hidden gems, such as Ye Cracke (pictured), where John Lennon used to drink when he was at the nearby art college. There's more Beatles memorabilia at the Grapes in Mathew Street, close to the Cavern Club, and at the nearby White Star. Roscoe: great victory for all pub lovers
Carol Ross, landlady of the Roscoe Head in Liverpool, is finally victorious. She now owns the historic pub after years of struggle with Punch Taverns and New River Retail. She is now free to sell the beers she favours, not those imposed on her by giant pub companies. Carol is full of praise for her supporters throughout the country who backed her in her battle for freedom
