Hooky kicks off a new range of cask ales

Hook Norton, with its classic tower brewery in Oxfordshire, celebrates 175 years of brewing this year with an exciting range of cask ales that includes old favourites and some new beers. The season hicks off in style with Outside Half for the rugby season followed with Double Stout, Haymaker, Twelve Days Porter, Lock Steady and Autumn Ways. As well as cask, there will be bottled versions too.

Historic Burton ales restored by grandson

Jamie Allsopp, seven times grandson of Samuel Allsopp, has restored the name and the beers of the historic brewer who was the first to make IPA in Burton-on-Trent. Jamie has used original recipes and yeast to make Pale Ale, IPA and Pilsner. The beers are currently brewed by the Kirkstall Brewery in Leeds but Jamie is looking for a site in Burton

Big beer week seeks to boost cask ale

Cask Ale Week -- 21 September to 1 October -- will seek to boost the fortunes of Britain's unique beer style as it attempts to recover from Covid and lockdowns. Sales of cask ale are down by an alarming 20 per cent though some brewers -- including Timothy Taylor and Robinsons -- say sales are recovering well. Brewers and pub companies will support Cask Ale Week with special promotions in their pubs.

How long should a lager beer be aged?

Scottish brewer Innis & Gunn has launched 12 Moons, a lager that's aged and matured for 12 months. Dougal Sharp, the founder of I&G, thinks it may be the longest-lagered beer in the word. Samichlaus, brewed in Austria, is aged for 10 months while the Czech Budweiser Budvar Reserve enjoys 200 days in the lager cellar.
