Former City of London trading analyst Peter Tiley, who had never pulled a pint before, has walked away with the national Pub of the Year award from CAMRA -- the Campaign for Real Ale -- at the Salutation Inn in the village of Ham in Gloucestershire. The pub is known locally as "the Sally" and impressed the judges with its range of real ales, ciders and perries -- and the warm welcome from Peter and Claire Tiley and their staff

Both towns and villages see the hearts ripped out of their communities as pubs close. Anglia Ruskin University has teamed up with the Tram Depot pub in Cambridge for research into how drinkers choose their favourite beers on the bar. Using "eye tracking" goggles, the research will analyse why some pump clip have more appeal than others

Christmas arrived early in Islington, North London, on Sunday 21 December when the William IV pub laid on a special meal for the homeless and those struggling financially. 400 meals were served and vegetables for the occasion were donated by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Britain's giant pubcos were dealt a major blow today when MPs voted to support a call to give pub tenants a "market rent" option to their contracts that will allow them buy beer free of the tie. The successful amendment was moved by Greg Mulholland (pictured second left with victorious landlords), chairman of the Parliamentary Save the Pub group. CAMRA hailed the vote a "landmark victory" for publicans and drinkers
