Fränkishes Rotbier (5.4%)
Utopian Brewing celebrates its fourth anniversary with a beer that pays homage to Franconian lagers dating from the 1500s. Rotbier’s roots are in Nuremberg but the style went on to influence the Märzen beers of Munich and the Vienna Red of Austria.
The amber colour of the beer is the result of kilning or gently roasting grain to a higher temperature than pale malt. As always with Utopian, the ingredients are all British, with malt and Fuggles hops.
It has a bright amber/red colour and a big foaming collar. The aroma has freshly-baked bread and spicy hops followed by a fruity and malty palate balanced by spicy hops. The finish is bittersweet and quenching, dry, bready, malt, fruity and hoppy. It’s a delight to drink.
