Love Lane Brewery opened in 2017 in the Baltic Triangle district of Liverpool: it was a former Red Light area for seamen at a time when love came with a price. But today the triangle is one of the trendiest areas of the city, with the brewery’s Taproom at its heart.

The Taproom is currently closed but the brewery continues to work and is offering a wide range of beers during the lock down. Love Lane was the brain child of Steve Crawley, an experienced brewery operator who was managing director of the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh but left when it was taken over by Heineken UK.

Steve hails from the Wirral and he returned to his home patch with the aim of resurrecting one of Liverpool’s famous beers, Higson’s Bitter. This is now part of the portfolio but the leading beer, which has quickly acquired cult status in the city, is Love Lane Pale Ale.

The draught version is not available during lock down but bottled and canned versions can be bought from the website. The beer has a complex recipe with grains comprised of Golden Promise pale malt, caramalt, wheat malt and amber malt. The hops are American Azacca, Centennial, Citra and Columbus with German Magnum.

The beer is burnished gold with a luscious aroma of tropical fruits, biscuit malt and spicy hops. There’s a fine balance of juicy malt, spicy hops and tangy fruit on the palate, followed by a lingering and quenching finish that is beautifully balanced between tart hops, rich fruit and biscuit malt.
