Scrum down for rugby beers

Added: Thursday, January 12th 2012

Two family brewers have launched beers they hope will boost England's fortunes in the Six Nations rugby tournament in February and help fans forget the fiasco of the World Cup last year.

Wadworth of Devizes in Wiltshire, best known for its 6X bitter, has brought out its seasonal ale St George & The Dragon early this year to coincide with the Six Nations, which takes place in February. The brewery describes the ale as "a refreshing, biscuity beer with a crisp and tangy hop palate, with hints of blackcurrant and orange fruit." The draught version will be on sale in selected Wadworth's pubs from February to April. A bottled version will be available from the brewery's visitor centre or online for £1.90 or £22 for 12 bottles: 01380 732277; www.wadworth.co.uk.

Meanwhile Fuller's in West London has launched Front Row, 3.7%, from February to March. It will be on sale in selected Fuller's pubs -- the estate numbers 366. The brewery describes the beer as having a light ruby colour, a biscuity flavour and deep bitterness from Challenger hops. www.fullers.co.uk.
