Double Stout is based on an 1898 recipe from the Hook Norton Brewery in Oxfordshire. The brewery is family owned, in the hands of the Clarke family.
It’s a Victorian “tower brewery”, with the brewing process flowing logically from floor to floor, water tanks at the top feeding mash tuns and coppers below. An ancient steam engine is still in place, providing energy in an emergency, while horse-drawn drays deliver to local pubs.
The beer is brewed with pale, black and brown malts with Challenger, Fuggles and Goldings hops. The dark malts deliver delicious aromas and flavours of caramel, chocolate and coffee, balanced by peppery and spicy hops, with burnt wood notes from oak casks.
It’s a seasonal beer currently on draught in Hook Norton pubs and in bottle from www.hooky.co.uk/product/double-stout
