Peculier IPA (5.1%)
Yorkshire brewer T&R Theakston is cashing in on the worldwide success of Old Peculier with this interpretation of India Pale Ale.
Its IPA is a very English version of the style, with a fine balance of malt and hops. It doesn’t blow your head off with a massive hop kick, as is the case with many American versions.
It’s not lacking in a good hop presence, though. The varieties are all English – Harlequin, Jester and Olicana – and they blend beautifully with pale malt.
The beer has a pale bronze colour and a superb aroma of juicy malt and fruity hops. There’s a fine balance of honeyed malt and spicy hops on the palate followed by a bittersweet finish with biscuit malt and bitter and fruity hops.
It’s a wonderfully refreshing beer and one of the best IPAs I have sampled for some time.
