Wye Valley is one of Britain’s oldest small independent breweries, founded in 1985 by Peter Amor, who had worked for Guinness in London.

His first brewery was based behind a pub in Hereford and moved to a second pub in the city that Peter owned, the Barrels.

After 18 years in Hereford, Peter and his son Vernon moved the kit to the former Symonds cider plant at Stoke Lacy. It produces 250,000 pints a week and delivers to more than 1,200 pubs, including eight of its own.

Its range of beers includes a renowned Wholesome Stout that reflects Peter Amor’s background with Guinness. He is now chairman of the brewery, with Vernon as managing director.

Butty Bach means Little Friend in English and it has won many awards in Welsh beer competitions. It’s a premium bitter brewed with Maris Otter malt and Bramling Cross, Fuggles and Goldings hops.

It has a rich aroma of spicy hops and honeyed malt, with a fine balance of malt, hops and tart fruit on the palate. The finish is refreshing with continuing notes of spicy and fruity hops and honeyed malt.

The beer is on draught in many pubs in the Wye Valley trading area. The packaged version is bottle conditioned with live yeast.

It’s available in selected outlets of Asda, Morrisons and Spar and costs between £1.95 and £2.20. An eight-bottle pack costs £25 from www.wyevalleybrewery.co.uk
