Hall & Woodhouse NEIPA (5.5%)

Hall & Woodhouse is a family brewery founded in 1777 and best known for its traditional Badger cask beers brewed in Blandford Forum in Dorset. But it is not resting on its laurels. In 2011 it started to build a new brew house that would enable it to produce both ale and lager and head brewer Toby Heaseman has used the new facilities, based on the European method of mash mixer and lauter tun, to fashion a new range of beers that will appeal in particular to younger drinkers.

NEIPA is the first beer in a new series called Small Batch. It’s based on the American New England style of IPAs that offer a more balanced profile than the heavily hopped interpretations on the West Coast.

The beer is brewed with pale malt, oats and wheat and is hopped with Citra, El Dorado and Mosaic American varieties. It’s unfiltered and has a fruity aroma and palate with pineapple, mango and tangerine to the fore. The finish is quenching with a good balance of grain and hops.

The beer is available in Hall & Woodhouse pubs and from the brewery online shop, £19.20 for six 500ml bottles. www.badgerbeers.com/product/small-batch-1/
