Luftballon, Signature Brew

Added: Friday, October 1st 2021

Style Oktoberfest ABV 5.5%

Luftballon 5.5% Signature Brew

Cue oompah bands and endless choruses of “Ein prosit, ein prosit” – “A toast, a toast”. Yes, it’s Oktoberfest time but it’s been cancelled in Munich this year so you will have to organise your own mini-fest with the help of Signature Brew in Walthamstow, East London.

The brewery specialises in beers produced with music in mind and collaborative brews with musical groups. Luftballon – sky balloon – is inspired by the hit record by Nena in Germany called 99 Red Balloons, with several cover versions.

This is a true Oktoberbest-style beer brewed with Pilsner malt and Hallertau Tradition hops: the Hallertau, north of Munich, is the world’s biggest hop growing region and produces what the Germans call “noble” varieties – floral and spicy, in sharp distinction to the citrus-driven hops from North America.

Luftballon is a star-bright golden lager with a finely balanced aroma of toasted malt and floral hops. A touch of lemon fruit is detectable on the palate with continuing notes of toasted malt and spicy hops. The finish is long, with bitter and spicy hops balancing rich malt. It’s quenching and delicious.

£3.35  for a 330ml can from www.signaturebrew.co.uk. The beer can be bought in packs of 24.
