Barrel-aged Porter, Salcombe

Added: Tuesday, December 1st 2020

Style Porter ABV 6.2%

Salcombe Barrel-aged Porter (6.2%)

The Devon brewery has aged its award-wining Island Street Porter in bourbon and whisky barrels for six months and you can choose one or both of the beers. The porter is brewed with pale, cara, chocolate and crystal malts with roasted barley and flaked oats. The hops are Bramling Cross and Endeavour.

The version aged in bourbon barrels has rich oak, caramel, vanilla, butterscotch and dark fruit on the nose. The palate is bittersweet, with creamy malt and continuing notes of caramel, vanilla and butterscotch. There’s some gentle hop bitterness in the finish with more notes of creamy malt, butterscotch, dark fruit and caramel.

The second version has been aged in Speyside whisky barrels and has oak and a big hit of whisky on the nose, with peat, dark grain, burnt fruit and hop resins. The bittersweet palate has caramel and vanilla notes along with a creamy malt touch reminiscent of nougat and light, bitter hops. The tangy finish has warming whisky notes balanced by sweet grain, dark fruit, oak, caramel and peat.

Each 750ml bottle costs £19.99. Treat yourself for Christmas. www.salcombebrewery.com
