St Peter's Whisky Beer, St Peter's

Added: Tuesday, October 1st 2019

Style Whisky beer ABV 4.8%

St Peter's is a small artisan brewery set behind a 13th-century hall in a remote part of Suffolk. The hall has vaulted ceilings, great inglenooks, stained-glass mullioned windows and beams, with artefacts dedicated to St Peter. John Murphy built his brewery in 1996 with brand-new equipment, not second hand kit. Pure brewing water is pumped from 300 feet beneath the surface and raw materials include Halcyon barley and Challenger and Goldings hops.

The brewery has taken its popular golden ale and added a shot of whisky from the English Whisky Company, which makes single malt whiskies on a site between Thetford and Norwich. It's the first English whisky maker for more than 100 years and uses malt supplied by Crisp in Norfolk.

The beer has an oaky and smoky aroma with a fine balance of biscuit malt, spicy hops and a hint of whisky. Whisky notes build on the palate, balanced by juicy malt and crisp, peppery hops. The finish is dry with pronounced notes of oak, whisky, honeyed malt and peppery hops.

£26.50 per case. www.stpetersbrewery.co.uk
