New beers on the block

Flavourly, the online craft beer specialist, has launched Small Batch Originals, a range of new craft beers from Wiper and True, Brew by Numbers, Siren Craft Brew, Tempest, Anspach & Hobday and Wild Card, In Devon, Salcombe Brewery has launched its first IPA, Atlas, brewed with British, American and New Zealand hops. The Co-op has launched Toast, a hazy pale ale, in collaboration with Toast, using surplus bread from its suppliers.

Anger at delay in beer duty review

Brewers and consumer groups have acted angrily to a delay in a review of beer excise duty levels. The review was announced in the 2021 budget but will not be brought in until the autumn. CAMRA, SIBA, UK Hospitality and the British Beer & Pub Association have all called on the government not to delay the review and to bring in a lower rate of duty for draught beer. The Great British Beer Festival is back after a two-year break as a result of Covid. With beers from 12 countries, GBBF is now the world's major festival where choice is concerned. As well as beer, cider, perry, wine and gin will be showcased. There will be live music and street food, a home-brewing competition and daily talks and tastings.

In a video commissioned by Black Sheep, Maisie tackles head-on some of the myths surrounding cask beer: that it's drunk only by old men and is served warm, flat and vinegary, Black Sheep describes cask as "the original craft beer", with a wide variety of styles that suit all age groups

Brewers recreate Porter from the wood

Two South London brewers, Anspach & Hobday and Orbit Beers, have joined forces to recreate a genuine Running Porter from the 19th century, using a recipe from Truman's brewery in Whitechapel. The beer will be served from wooden casks at Woodfest, the annual celebration organised by the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood but bottled versions are available for purchase. One batch will be kept back and aged to produce a Keeping Porter

Easter Saturday is boost Bass day

Lovers of Draught Bass are urging drinkers and pubs to boost the beer on 16 April, Easter Saturday, which has been dubbed National Bass Day. The beer is now owned by global giant AB InBev. At its peak 800,000 barrels a year were brewed but that fallen to just 30,000 today. Potential buyers of the beer would not be given the famous red triangle trademark.
