Magic Rock’s head brewer Stuart Ross, who previously brewed at Kelham Island in Sheffield, admits to an epiphany when he tasted West Coast IPAs and pale ales in the United States. He says he wanted to bring these “wonderful fresh flavours” to Magic Rock, founded in 2011 in Huddersfield.

“We brew a range of hop-forward, bold and exciting beers,” he says. The outstanding example is Cannonball, Magic Rock’s best-selling IPA. It’s brewed with extra pale Golden Promise malt and is hopped with Amarillo, Centennial, Citra, Columbus, Magnum and Simcoe varieties.

The unfiltered beer has a hazy gold colour with a big blast of citrus fruit on the nose, with lemon, lime, grapefruit and blood orange to the fore, balanced by honeyed malt and peppery hops. Honeyed malt builds in the mouth but is complemented by bittersweet fruit and peppery hops. The finish is long and quenching with juicy malt, citrus fruit and bitter hop resins, with a dry finale.

The canned beer costs £2.30 or £13.75 for six from www.magicrockbrewing.com. It’s widely available in specialist beer shops, for example £3.30 from the Beer Shop, St Albans.
